Job Summary

The Fire Safety Director ensures the safety of all guests, employees, visitors, and property at the Studio Museum in Harlem. This role demands a strong commitment to professionalism, attention to detail, and the ability to uphold the Museum’s dedication to excellence and inclusivity. The Fire Safety Director will lead all aspects of fire safety and emergency response, fostering a secure and welcoming environment for all.

Responsibilities

Essential Duties And Responsibilities

  • Maintain a professional and approachable demeanor, ensuring a safe and welcoming atmosphere for all visitors, staff, and guests.
  • Enforce fire safety protocols and emergency procedures, ensuring compliance with local and federal fire safety standards.
  • Conduct regular inspections of fire safety systems, including extinguishers, alarms, and sprinkler systems, ensuring all equipment is operational and compliant.
  • Develop, implement, and lead fire emergency response plans and drills in coordination with Museum staff.
  • Monitor the premises, identify potential fire hazards, and address any unsafe conditions proactively.
  • Train staff in fire safety protocols and emergency response, reinforcing the Museum's commitment to preparedness and safety.
  • Maintain accurate records of inspections, incidents, and compliance certifications, providing detailed reports as required.
  • Serve as the primary point of contact for fire department officials, emergency responders, and safety inspectors.
  • Respond promptly and effectively to emergencies, accidents, or incidents involving fire safety concerns.
  • Collaborate with Museum leadership and departments to enhance the safety and security of exhibitions, programs, and events.

Job Requirements

Skills And Qualifications

  • Proven ability to lead with professionalism, tact, and diplomacy in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong knowledge of fire safety standards, emergency response procedures, and building codes.
  • Effective communication skills, with fluency in English; additional languages are a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in staff training, team coordination, and customer service.
  • Ability to assess complex situations, identify solutions, and act decisively under pressure.

Education And Experience

  • Secondary school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in fire safety or security roles, preferably in a cultural or public-facing institution.
  • Certified Fire Safety Director License and New York State Security Guard License required.
  • Completion of required training per New York Department of State and Division of Criminal Justice Services regulations:
  • 8-Hour Pre-Assignment Training
  • 16-Hour On-The-Job Training
  • 8-Hour Annual In-Service Training
  • CPR and first aid certification preferred.

Physical Demands

  • Ability to stand, walk, and patrol for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift, carry, or move objects up to 50 pounds.
  • Comfort with exposure to varying temperatures, noise levels, and physical exertion during emergency situations.

Work Environment

  • This position is considered a non-exempt position for purposes of federal wage and hour law, which means that you will be eligible for overtime pay for hours in excess of 40 in a given workweek, with evening and weekend availability as needed.
