Responsibilities

The Environmental, Health & Safety (EHS) Engineer will work under the direction of the Corporate EHS Manager. The EHS Engineer will be a leader for driving continuous improvement in safety performance at the Research & Development (R&D) Technology Center, Global Solutions department, and Projects group.

This role will be comprised of 50% R&D Technology Center and 50% Global Solutions and Projects.  

Duties/Responsibilities:

  • Drives a Target Zero culture for Health & Safety at the R&D Technology Center with strong involvement and ownership from each teammate.  
  • Safety training Instructor for live training on key safety programs (e.g., LOTO, CSE, Fall Protection).
  • Lead periodic safety meetings.
  • Safety support and enforcement for Pilot Plant operations and maintenance.
  • Perform Job Hazard Analyses (JHAs).
  • Authorize work permits (e.g., Hot Work, LOTO, Line opening, Roof access, electrical).
  • Perform Working from Heights assessments and lead improvement projects.
  • Lead ergonomic improvement projects.
  • Participate and/or lead incident investigations.
  • Participate in program audits (e.g., LOTO, Hot Work, Working From Heights).
  • Update existing H&S programs (e.g., Hazcom, Emergency Action Plan, Hot Work).
  • Assist with new process and procedure development to support ISO-45001 certification and Midrex Integrated Management System.
  • Assist with ISO-45001 audits and audit preparation.
  • Ensures all applicable Safety Data Sheets are maintained and readily accessible when needed.
  • Personal Protection Equipment (PPE) management.
  • 4-gas monitors management (calibrations and maintain database).
  • Hazardous Waste and Universal Waste management.

Job Requirements

Required:

  • Understanding of OSHA 1910 and 1926.
  • Direct experience with a safety program(s).
  • Very strong interpersonal, oral, and written skills.  
  • Willingness to challenge the status quo.  
  • Comfortable providing coaching and directions to technicians and craft workers.  
  • Experience conducting training.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office suite software (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, SharePoint).

Preferred:

  • Completion of OSHA 30.
  • Knowledge of international OHS regulations.
  • Experience at Midrex plants.
  • Industrial safety-related experience.

Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Health and Safety, occupational safety, industrial hygiene, and/or engineering discipline.
  • Five years of direct engineering work experience within Midrex, industrial facility, or laboratory environment, preferably safety experience.

Physical Requirements:

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Ability to traverse throughout the R&D Technology Center, including climbing tall structures, to make visual inspections of safety practices and conditions.
  • Occasionally lift and move items weighing 50 pounds or less.
