System Safety Specialist II    $76,577 - $85,288

System Safety Specialist III   $86,565 - $98,686

System Safety Specialist IV   $96,433 - $112,083

Responsibilities

Responsibilities:

The System Safety Specialist will report to the Manager, Environmental Protection. Duties include but are not limited to: Management of the hazardous waste, infectious waste, lamp disposal or sampling/analysis contract. Preparation and /or review of air pollution permits. Review of manifests and certificates of disposal. Performance of field surveys and review of facility records to determine compliance with various environmental regulations and NYCT Policies. Preparation of comprehensive reports on environmental compliance issues, including recommendations. Review and interpretation of existing and proposed environmental regulations. Analyses of programs and policies to ensure NYCT compliance with environmental regulations. This position will support the environmental compliance efforts of the MTA Bus Company. Must be available for emergency response duties (in company vehicle) and have a valid Driver's license.

Job Requirements

Education and Experience:

1. A baccalaureate degree from an accredited college or university in engineering, fire safety, environmental or occupational safety, ergonomics, statistics, mathematics, chemical, physical or biological sciences, industrial hygiene, safety management, or a related field; plus at least two (2) years of satisfactory full-time experience in professional system safety-related work; or

2.An associate degree from an accredited college or university in a field listed in “1” above; plus, four (4) years of satisfactory, full-time experience in professional system safety-related work; or

3.A four-year high school diploma or its educational equivalent plus six (6) years of satisfactory, full-time professional system safety-related work; or

4.Education and/or experience equivalent to that listed in “1”,"2" or “3” above. A master's degree in any of the fields indicated above may be substituted for one (1) year of experience.

Special notes:
1. To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level II, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level I or one additional year performing duties described in "1" above.

2. To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level III, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level II or two additional years performing duties described in "1" above.

3.To be eligible for placement in Assignment Level IV, individuals must have, after meeting the qualification requirements, either one year served in the Transit Authority at Assignment Level III or three additional years performing duties described in "1" above, at least one year of which must have been in a supervisory position.

Desired Skills:

The successful candidate will have extensive knowledge of federal and state environmental regulations. Demonstrate problem solving skills to address environmental issues. Classification of waste streams is required. Knowledge of the Clean Water Act, Clean Air Act and proposed regulation changes is desired. Participation as team member in identifying aspects and impacts, developing objectives and targets, monitoring and measurement of NYCT Environmental Management System Program is desired. Must have familiarity with Windows, Word, Excel, and Access.
