Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities:

  • Plan Development: Working in conjunction with property managers, and select fire safety vendor, establish detailed Fire Safety and Emergency Action Plans (FS/EAPs), tailored to each building's structure, layout, and occupancy.
  • Compliance Oversight: Evaluate the safety posture of all residential properties across New York City and ensure compliance to NYC fire codes, including Local Laws, and NFPA standards. Working collaboratively with the Related Security and Fire Safety teams, develop training policies which may supersede current codes and regulations.
  • Inspection Coordination: Assist residential property managers, and select vendors, with routine inspections, ensuring building systems such as fire alarms and sprinklers, along with fire extinguishers, are operational and code-compliant.
  • Staff Training: Train residential building staff on established fire safety best practices, evacuation procedures according to the type of structure, non-fire emergency procedures (EAP) if applicable, and assist with fire drills.
  • Resident Training: Cultivate a professional relationship with our residents and provide lifesaving information, in both written format and via oral presentations, on what to do during a fire incident and means of egress if building evacuation is necessary.
  • Incident Management: Investigate fire-related incidents, identify causes, and implement corrective actions. Maintain relationships with residential property management staff and the local fire companies in each area.
  • Communication: Serve as the primary liaison with the FDNY, property managers, and tenants regarding fire safety issues.
  • Documentation: Maintain accurate records of drills, inspections, and compliance certifications for audits.

Job Requirements

We are seeking an individual, knowledgeable and experienced in Fire Life Safety procedures, or Firefighting Operations, to evaluate ,design, implement, and manage, comprehensive fire safety plans across our residential properties in New York City. The ideal candidate will ensure compliance with New York City Building and Fire regulations, train building staff on FDNY fire prevention best practices, liaison with first responders, and lead initiatives to enhance fire prevention and emergency response protocols.

QualificationsEducation

Bachelor’s degree in a fire science field such as Fire Protection, Fire Investigations, Firefighting, or a degree in Criminal Justice, Engineering, or a related field (preferred).

Certification

Documented training with a professional firefighting department or FDNY Certificates of Fitness are acceptable. The F-89 Certificate of Fitness for Fire Life Safety Director is preferred, but not currently required. Membership in a volunteer firefighting department or previous law enforcement experience is also acceptable. Additional certifications from organizations or agencies such as the National Fire Prevention Association (NFPA), National Fire Service Academy (NFA), Occupational Health and Safety Administration (OSHA) or the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) certifications are acceptable.

Experience:

Minimum of ten (10) years of experience in firefighting, with supervisory experience in the rank of a fire lieutenant, fire captain, or fire chief.

Property operations field experience as a fire safety manager, preferably in a high-rise residential or commercial building is beneficial.

Knowledge:

Strong understanding of NYC Fire Code, Building Code, and relevant compliance standards.

Skills:

Excellent communication and organizational skills.

Ability to lead training sessions and emergency drills.

Proficiency in safety reporting tools and technology.

Demonstrated experience developing fire safety plans in NYC.
