Position Summary:

Reporting to the Senior Fire Protection Group Lead, the Fire Protection Engineer is responsible for the coordination, development, and production of deliverables in support of the overall scope of fire protection design. The Fire Protection Engineer will take ownership of the completeness, accuracy and timeliness of the work assigned and within the agreed project budget. Individuals in this position must demonstrate the ability to lead a design effort as a member of a multi-disciplinary team to include architects, structural, mechanical, civil and electrical engineers.  We are looking for self-motivated personality with the ability to work collaboratively and independently as appropriate in studio or remote environments

The position is in the Federal Buildings Business Unit, and the project type is majority US Federal Government facilities that are contracted by Department of Defense clients (USACE, NAVFAC, etc.) as well as Federal Civilian clients to include NASA, FAA, GSA, OBO and Intelligence Community amongst many others. The Senior Fire Protection Engineer will be directing the activities of design staff to produce drawings and calculations for fire sprinkler systems, special hazards suppression systems, fire pumps, fire alarm and mass notification, and building/life safety codes analysis. Previous design experience is a plus but please do not self-select yourself out of a position and all that are interested in a career in fire protection engineering are encouraged to apply.

The position is hybrid with a minimum office attendance of two days per week in the office, but more days are encouraged to become more engrained with the culture of Jacobs.

The base salary range for this position is $97,700.00 to $171,000.00. Within the range, individual pay is determined by work location and additional factors, including job-related skills, experience, and relevant education or training.

Type of Work

  • Work in a fast-paced environment under tight deadlines, while maintaining high quality standards
  • Act as the Designer of Record (DOR) for Fire Protection design projects including schedule, budget, delegation of work to junior staff, quality control and sealing/stamping construction drawings and specifications.
  • Gather information, interview stakeholders, make studies, perform calculations, and prepare original rough layouts and sketches as required
  • Present findings and outcomes to clients and other stakeholders
  • Perform high level tasks under minimal supervision using well-defined standards, procedures and codes
  • Perform product research; assist project designers and project architects with materials selection and system research
  • Perform designs for fire sprinkler, suppression, and fire alarm system layout utilizing hydraulic calculation programs, and knowledge of ICC, NFPA Codes, and International Building and Fire Codes
  • Perform construction administration and field investigation tasks for assigned projects including document management and processing RFI's and Change Orders

Team Development Responsibilities:

  • Provide staffing development and mentoring for junior staff to include ensuring quality delivery of product completed by all supervised by Fire Protection Engineer
  • Provide project quality control reviews at project milestones and continuous “over-the-shoulder” discipline checks

Job Requirements

Here's what you'll need

  • U.S. Citizenship
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Fire Protection Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Fire Protection Safety Technology or anything related
  • At least 4 years' Fire Protection design experience
  • Overseas & US based travel may be required
  • Proficiency in REVIT

Ideally, you’ll also have

  • Previous DoD experience, basic competency with Federal energy standards, Unified Facility Criteria (UFC) and other Government requirements
  • Design Build experience and DBIA certification
  • Clearance or ability to secure a clearance
  • PE in any US State, having passed the fire protection engineering examination
