Responsibilities
Role Overview
Homer Fire Protection is seeking a NICET-certified Fire Alarm Technician to build and lead our fire alarm inspection and service operations. You will manage a daily route of commercial accounts (restaurants, schools, offices, hospitality, and light industrial), performing code-required inspections, testing, service, and repairs per NFPA 72. You will also support fire extinguisher and emergency lighting operations.
Key Responsibilities
Inspection & Testing
- Perform periodic inspections and testing of commercial fire alarm systems per NFPA 72 and local AHJ requirements.
- Test initiating devices (smoke/heat detectors, pull stations, duct detectors), notification appliances, and monitoring connections.
- Identify and document deficiencies/impairments clearly for customers.
- Verify panel programming, battery backup capacity, and central-station communication paths.
Service & Maintenance
- Perform sensitivity testing, cleaning, and replacement of smoke detectors.
- Replace batteries, devices, and notification appliances during routine service.
- Perform system resets and coordinate with monitoring centers to place systems on/off test.
- Coordinate testing schedules with facility staff and tenants to minimize operational downtime.
Repairs & Troubleshooting
- Diagnose and repair panel troubles, ground faults, wiring faults, and device failures.
- Troubleshoot addressable loops to restore systems to full operational and code-compliant status.
- Provide same-day or emergency repair response to minimize customer downtime.
Documentation & Customer Communication
- Maintain accurate digital NFPA 72 inspection reports for Fire Marshal review via Homer Fire’s field documentation system.
- Explain inspection findings, code requirements, and corrective timelines professionally to facility managers.
- Flag recurring issues, escalate complex repairs, and stay current on Northern Virginia, Maryland, and DC AHJ standards.
Field Operations
- Manage a daily route across the DMV area with complete job-site ownership.
- Participate in an on-call rotation for emergency service calls.
Job Requirements
What We’re Looking For
- Certification: NICET Level II (Fire Alarm Systems or Inspection & Testing of Fire Alarm Systems) OR equivalent factory certification (FireLite, Notifier, Silent Knight) with 3+ years of relevant experience.
- Experience: 3+ years inspecting, testing, and servicing commercial fire alarm systems.
- Technical Skills:
- Working knowledge of NFPA 72 and NFPA 10 standards.
- Hands-on experience with addressable/conventional panels (FireLite, Silent Knight, Notifier, Potter, or equivalent).
- Strong electrical troubleshooting and low-voltage wiring competence.
- Licensing: Valid Virginia Driver’s License.
- Communication & Tech: Strong customer-facing communication skills; experience with digital inspection software and AHJ submittals is a plus.
