Anaheim Fire & Rescue provides emergency fire protection and medical services to residents and visitors of the City of Anaheim.  We are recruiting experienced Firefighter / Firefighter Paramedic individuals to join us in our mission to ensure the safety and welfare of the public we serve through the services we provide. As a valued member of our team, you will demonstrate the values of the organization, provide a high level of customer service, participating in all phases of all-risk emergency operations including fire suppression, prehospital emergency medical care/transport, and technical rescue operations.

This recruitment will yield an eligible list of Firefighter/Firefighter Paramedic candidates for our March 2025 Firefighter Recruit Academy. Please review the entire recruitment bulletin for important information before applying.

Salary: $6,899.01 - $9,245.60 per month.

IMPORTANT APPLICATION INFORMATION AND INSTRUCTIONS

Applications will be accepted until Friday, August 30, 2024 at 5:00PM.  Applicants are encouraged to apply early.  Applications will not be accepted after this deadline. The selection process may include, but is not limited to a qualifications review, physical ability Biddle test, oral interview, and an interview with the Fire Chief.  Tentative dates and descriptions are provided below:

  • August 5 – August 30 - Accepting Applications
  • October 5 - Biddle Physical Ability Test will be coordinated by Anaheim Fire & Rescue at a nearby Orange County college.  Qualified applicants will receive further details regarding scheduling and testing information after the posting period.
    • Biddle Physical Ability Waiver - Candidates who possess proof of successfully completing the Biddle Physical Ability Test within the last 6 months (February 29, 2024 - August 30, 2024) can attach proof to their application in order to waive this portion of the recruitment process.
  • October 15 - 18 - Oral Interview, dates TBD
  • October 21 - 25 - Chief's Interview, dates TBD
  • October 28, 2024 – February 2025 - Pre-employment process
  • March 2025 - Academy Starts, date TBD.

Further selection steps include a medical examination, which includes drug/alcohol screening, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and background investigation. The interview with the background investigator and completion of the background investigation will include, but is not limited to, verification and evaluation of any present and/or past use of drugs, driving and employment history.

Please review the following common disqualifiers.  If any items listed pertain to you, you will be automatically disqualified in the background investigation.  You may, at this time, want to screen yourself and withdraw prior to starting the recruitment process.

  • Any illegal use, sales, or possession of a drug classified as an opiate (heroin, opium, etc.) or PCP.
  • Any use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) within five years of date of application.
  • Any illegal use of anabolic steroids within three years of date of application.
  • A pattern or history of irresponsibility as evidenced by debt collections, civil judgments, failure to pay, late payments, etc.
  • Two or more at-fault traffic collisions within three years of the date of application.
  • Conviction of a hit-and run offense.
  • Any driver's license suspension within five years of date of application.
  • Conviction of a felony crime.
  • Conviction of any misdemeanor crime within five years of application.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of any misdemeanor crime involving domestic violence, sexual-related offenses or crimes against children.
  • Any conviction as an adult, of a theft or larceny crime.

The following may result in disqualification and will be evaluated during the background process.

  • Use of cocaine, methamphetamine, hallucinogens (GHB, MDMA/ecstasy, ketamine, etc.) previous to five years of application.
  • Prior marijuana use.
  • Prior nitrous oxide use.
  • Illegal use of anabolic steroids previous to three years of application.
  • Illegal use of a hypodermic needle/ syringe.
  • A bankruptcy within the past three years of date of application.
  • More than one moving violation in the past 12 months, and/or three or more moving citations within the past three years, and/or five or more moving citations within the past five years of date of application.

Responsibilities

Firefighter Incentive/Education Pay (rates based on a 56hr per week schedule):

  • Paramedic: Upon accreditation and activation, Firefighter Paramedic positions are eligible for an additional Paramedic Assignment Pay (15% of top step of Firefighter I - $5.72 per hour).
  • Bilingual: Employee required to speak, read, and/or write in Spanish or other languages designated by the Fire Chief are eligible for $235.46 per pay period (Firefighter I-IV).
  • Education Incentive: Employees who satisfy the education requirement(s) and years of service are eligible for: Firefighter II (2.5%), Firefighter III (5%), and Firefighter IV (7.5%) incentive of base pay.
  • Other Assignment Pays: When assigned, employees are also eligible for: SWAT Tactical Medic - 5% of base pay, Fire Arson Investigation Assignment Pay - $4.95 per hour, Hazmat Assignment Pay - $4.95 per hour, Urban Search & Rescue Assignment Pay - $2.86 per hour, and Training Company Assignment Pay - $2.86 per hour.

Job Requirements

Anaheim Fire Academy / Probation Period: Probation begins on the date of appointment and ends twelve (12) months after completion of 6-week recruit academy training.

Qualifications

Age & Education: Graduation from high school or its equivalent.  Must be 18 years of age by date of appointment.

Experience and Training:  An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  An ideal candidate will be currently employed in California as a paid full-time firefighter / firefighter paramedic, with a minimum of two (2) years of experience as a firefighter with a government agency by August 30, 2024. Examples of government experience includes: cities, counties, special districts/authorities, tribal, and state and federal government.
 
Licenses and Certifications:

  • Graduation from a California Office of the Fire Marshal State Fire Training accredited Firefighter I Academy. (https://osfm.fire.ca.gov/what-we-do/state-fire-training/accredited-academies).  If your program is not listed, it is your responsibility to obtain documentation from the California Office of the Fire Marshal stating your program's accreditation.
  • State of California certification as an Emergency Medical Technician I and Defibrillation. If a paramedic, a valid State of California Paramedic Licensure.
  • A current American Heart Association CPR certification.
  • A valid Class "C" California Driver's License with Firefighter endorsement must be obtained by the end of the probationary period and maintained thereafter.

Proof of all required documents/certifications/licenses listed above must be attached to the application. Those who do not attach required documents will not be considered for the position.Highly Desired Qualifications:

  • Possession of an Orange County Emergency Medical Services (OCEMS) accreditation
  • Possession of a Hazardous Material First Responder Operations Certificate (FRO)
  • Possession of a Rescue Systems 1 Certificate (RSI)
  • S-190, Introduction to Wildland Fire Behaviors Certificate
  • Low Angle Rope Rescue Certificate (LARRO)
  • Confined Space Awareness Certificate
  • Bilingual skills (speak, read, and/or write)
