The City of Anaheim Public Utilities Department is seeking dynamic and team-oriented Maintenance Pipefitters and/or Apprentice Maintenance Pipefitters to perform maintenance and construction duties in the water utility, in the areas of mainline maintenance and construction, services and meters and valve maintenance and repair.

The Apprentice Maintenance Pipefitters is the entry-level classification where incumbents participate in a three-year formal apprenticeship program to become a journey-level Maintenance Pipefitter for our department.  Under close supervision, the Apprentice Maintenance Pipefitter assists in and learns the skills of a Maintenance Pipefitter through on-the-job training and supplementary education in maintenance and construction in the water utility.  Our Maintenance Pipefittersassist with construction, maintenance, and repair of water systems, including hydrants, valves, and water meters.  Maintenance Pipefitters also drive commercial vehicles and operate heavy equipment such as backhoes. The formal apprenticeship requires on-the-job training as well as attending weekend and evening classes and learning related coursework.


Candidates must have basic knowledge of pipefitter-related knowledge and experience. Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License with Tank Endorsement is required within six months of appointment.  Possession of a Distribution Operator Grade II Certificate from the California State Water Resources Control Board is required by completion of Apprenticeship Program.

Ideal candidates will possess a valid Class A Driver's license.  Possession of a Distribution Operator Grade II Certificate from the California State Water Resources Control Board is desired.

This recruitment will be used to fill three vacancies, either at the apprentice or journey level classification.

Responsibilities

Apprentice Maintenance Pipefitter

  • Drive, stock, maintain trucks and operate equipment; respond to emergency maintenance calls and assist in and learn the skills of a Maintenance Pipefitter.
  • Perform maintenance excavation and backfilling of new mains and appurtenances, main modifications and abandonment’s; install main taps, laterals, install and maintain fire hydrants; and stock, clean and maintain crew truck and related equipment and tools.
  • Perform maintenance and installation of small services, meters, and appurtenances, including excavation, backfilling and compaction of short trenches; and make service taps.
  • Operate, plot, and locate water system valves and valve boxes; repair and install valves; perform traffic control procedures in routing traffic; and maintain records and logs.
  • Operate a backhoe, for the installation of water pipe, valves, fittings and fire hydrants; haul equipment to and from job sites, and operate equipment such as water tankers, flatbeds, dump trucks, forklifts.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

The Apprentice Program Duties:

  • Step 1 - One Year - Under close supervision of Maintenance Pipefitter, drives and maintains a truck, loads and unloads pipe, prepares pipe for installation, operates air tools, makes excavations, works in the trench, operates tapping machines, installs and replaces water services, and sets meters.
  • Step 2 - One Year - Under supervision of a Maintenance Pipefitter, cuts pipe, makes up fittings, sets valve boxes, operates valves, flushes lines and fire hydrants and operates equipment.
  • Step 3 - One Year - Under general supervision of a Maintenance Pipefitter, installs, replaces and repairs water system mains, services and required equipment without limitations. Operates valves, flushes lines and fire hydrants, sets meters and answers minor trouble calls without supervision and operates all equipment used in the trade.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Maintenance Pipefitter

  • Perform maintenance and construction in the installation, chlorination, pressure testing, excavation, and backfilling of new mains and appurtances, main modifications and abandonments.
  • Install main taps, laterals, large meters, and vaults. Installs and maintains fire hydrants.
  • Perform maintenance and installation of small services, meters, and appurtances including excavation, backfilling, and compaction of short trenches, and makes service taps.
  • Operate plots and locates water system valves and valve boxes. Repairs and installs valves. Performs traffic control procedures in routing traffic and maintains records and logs.
  • Haul equipment to and from job sites, and operates equipment such as water tankers, flatbeds, dump trucks, forklifts, backhoes, and mobile crane.
  • Drive, stocks, and maintains trucks and operates equipment, and responds to emergency maintenance calls.
  • Mix concrete, builds rough forms, pours, and finishes concrete as required.
  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as require

Job Requirements

Apprentice Maintenance Pipefitter:

Experience and Training Guidelines:

  • Any combination of experience and training that would provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.
  • A typical way to obtain the knowledge and abilities are as follows:

Experience:

  • In use of common hand tools.

Ability to:

  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships; understand and carry out written and verbal instructions; to attend weekend and evening classes and related courses as outlined in the Apprentice Agreement.

License/Certification Required:  

  • Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License with Tank Endorsement is required within twelve months of appointment.
  • Possession of a Distribution Operator Grade II Certificate from the State of California Department of Public Health is required by completion of Apprenticeship Program.

Maintenance Pipefitter:

Experience:

  • As a journey level Maintenance Pipefitter or successful completion of the apprentice program. An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.

Knowledge of:

  • Methods, materials, practices and tools required for pipeline, hydrant service and meter installations, testing and repair; safety hazards as related to work assignment; water distribution systems and facilities.

Ability to:

  • Establishing and maintaining effective working relationships; understand and carry out written and verbal instructions; use and care for tools and equipment related to water utility; maintain reports and records.

License/Certification Required:

  • Possession of a valid Class A California Driver's License with tanker endorsement.
  • Possession of a Grade II Water Distribution Certificate issued by the State of California Department of Health Services.
