The City of Anaheim Public Works Department is seeking a highly motivated, results oriented Part Time Lead Security Officer with excellent customer service skills, who is seeking a challenging leadership role to monitor the work activities of contracted security personnel. Qualified candidates will possess journey-level experience as a Security Officer to include lead supervisory experience. Bilingual ability in English and another language is highly desirable.

Candidates must possess a California Driver's License and valid State of California-issued proprietary guard card by date of appointment.

  • Previous experience working with metal detectors and visitor management software programs is highly desirable.

Responsibilities

The following functions are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed functions and/or may be required to perform additional or different functions from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  • Supervise subordinate part-time security staff, assign work, train, coach and counsel employees and monitor performance.
  • Positions assigned to Public Works effectively monitor the performance of contracted guards at various city locations and provide input to vendor regarding contracted security employees.
  • Schedule security employees by using a computerized scheduling system.
  • Maintain policies and procedures related to Security functions to ensure compliance with security policies and regulations.
  • Resolve patron and City employees concerns within established policies and practices; receive lost items and requests for recovery of such items;
  • Maintain accurate and complete security reports, event logs; prepare and maintain various spreadsheets, databases and lists by a personal computer for reporting purposes.
     
  • Collect and analyze security data to determine security needs, security program goals, or program accomplishments.
  • Monitor activities and patrol City owned buildings and grounds; perform Security Guard duties as necessary.
  • Monitor and respond to computerized fire system; observe multiple panels in the security office to monitor doors, elevators, smoke detectors and fire dampers; monitor numerous cameras throughout the facility.
  • Lock and close gates and doors, check to make certain that equipment and lighting are secured for safety; install locks and/or special security equipment as required; issue keys to clients as needed.
  • Check for water and gas leaks and other physical hazards or malfunctions and take necessary action to have the problem corrected.
  • Issue and safeguard equipment such as city owned vehicles, two-way radios, access cards, keys, and other various security equipment and electronic checkpoint software.

  • Perform related duties and responsibilities as required.

Job Requirements

Experience:  Journey-level (two years) experience as a Security Guard. An equivalent combination of experience and training sufficient to perform the essential job functions and provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying.  

Knowledge of: City codes and parking laws; methods and procedures of security work; and principles of supervision and training; relevant equipment, policies, procedures, and strategies to promote effective local, state, or security operations for the protection of people, data, property, and facilities; of the structure and content of the English language including the meaning and spelling of words, rules of composition, and grammar. City, state and federal rules, laws, and regulations as they apply to public health, public safety, parking and public nuisance issues.

Ability to: Maintain interpersonal relations and diplomacy with people; effectively supervise and train subordinates; prepare written reports; schedule employees and make work assignments to meet department needs; communicate effectively both orally and in writing; stay abreast of safety and legal requirements affecting the security operations; demonstrate professionalism, ethics, cultural diversity and discrimination awareness; operate city owned radios, vehicles; read and understand departmental policies, rules, regulations and instructions; use discretion and sound judgment; work independently;  maintain availability to work any shift, weekends, holidays and emergency call out without restriction; and establish and maintain effective working relationships with those encountered in the course of work.

License/Certification Required:

  • Possession of a valid California Driver's License by date of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid State of California-issued proprietary guard card by date of appointment.
  • Ability to obtain or qualify for AED/CPR training is desirable.
