This Opportunity
WSP is currently initiating a search for a Director of Health and Safety (H & S) for our Advisory and Planning Business Line. The Director of H & S will provide support to business operations and the project teams across WSP USA in the Advisory and Planning Business line. This position is a Vice President level position reporting to the US Corporate Health and Safety Leader. The candidate may work out of any WSP US office.
The Director of H & S is a leadership role responsible for partnering with operations to ensure a safe and compliant work environment, promoting a culture of caring, and minimizing HSE risks across Advisory and Planning. The Director of H & S will promote alignment of HSE strategies with US and Global programs and will be accountable for the effective delivery of HSE Regional Action Plans.

Responsibilities
Your Impact
- Support the US HSEQ team on initiatives and governance.
- Responsible for partnering with Advisory and Planning Business Line leadership in meeting WSP’s HSE Goals and Objectives.
- Manage a team of HSE professionals supporting various aspects of Advisory and Planning HSE programs.
- Provides key contact for client related HSE issues within their scope of authority. Develops and fosters relationships with clients and the operational sectors.
- Leads strategic planning, development, review and implementation of Advisory and Planning HSE initiatives, training programs, policies, and processes.
- Leads the HSE Committee program within Advisory and Planning.
- Produces HSE communications such as newsletters and campaigns.
- Develop and deliver training courses within areas of expertise.
- Provides HSE change management support.
- Supports compliance of the Quality program.
- Lead / support investigations into near misses, incidents, and OSHA/MSHA Recordable and Reportable injuries or illnesses.
- Conduct periodic visits of project sites to review HSE performance and provide HSE support.
- Provide HSE project oversight, review of site-specific HSE plans and programmatic safety issues.
- Review International travel planning submittals and approve in coordination with operations.
- Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company funds, resources, and conduct while adhering to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies and procedures
- Operates with significant autonomy, makes complex decisions in consultation with internal and external stakeholders, as appropriate.
Job Requirements
Required Qualifications
- Possess strong interpersonal skills with ability to work effectively with a broad range of individuals, from field technicians to senior management.
- Able to effectively communicate with employees, management, and external stakeholders on HSE matters.
- Strong leadership and team management skills.
- Broad knowledge of safety and occupational health principles, methods, and techniques.
- Strong familiarity and knowledge of OSHA 29 CFR 1910 and CFR 1926
- Skilled in accident and incident investigation.
- Skilled in recognizing hazardous or potentially hazardous conditions, developing measures to eliminate or control these conditions and effectively communicating the appropriate measures to resolve these problems is essential.
- Travel 40%
- Bachelors or Master’s Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or related Sciences preferred
- 12+ years in HSE related environment.
- This role is subject to a client-mandated drug/alcohol testing policy. As such, employee may be subject to random drug/alcohol tests. A copy of this policy will be provided during employee onboarding and is available upon applicant request.

- Valid driver license
Preferred Qualifications
- Certified Safety Professional (CSP) credential and/or a Certified Industrial Hygienist (CIH) or equivalent preferred.
