Assist the Stewards in the day-to-day operations at NYRA race tracks; monitor the treatment offered by private veterinarians to horses racing at all NYRA tracks; supervise and educate security personnel (Horse Watch Detail) and provide support with all racing related investigations.In reporting to the NYRA Steward, the Safety Steward consults and advises stakeholders on matters relating to racing integrity and in areas of safety and health of jockeys, horsemen, and the equine athlete and how NYRA may improve industry standards at all the NYRA racing facilities.

Responsibilities

Essential Functions

  • Monitor and observe daily backside activities;
  • Monitor and enforce compliance for race day medication regulations;
  • Follow-up on leads which may involve the inappropriate or illegal use of medications, such as permitted and prohibited drugs which may affect racing performance;
  • Make recommendations to the NYRA, New York State and Jockey Club Stewards to ensure the integrity of racing and compliance with horse racing laws and regulations;
  • Conduct safety checks during training hours;
  • Assist stewards during formal hearings;
  • Verify NYRA credentials of participants are current and in good standing.
  • Assist NYRA investigators with the barn inspections on medication positives and with internal investigations;
  • Oversee continuing education classes for provisional exercise riders and apprentice jockeys.
  • Focal point for licensee (i.e., jockeys, trainers and owners) inquiries on racing and safety issues;
  • Monitor training to ensure that exercise riders, outriders, and pony riders observe all rules;
  • Administer routine breathalyzer checks on exercise riders.
  • Help assure proper horse ambulance protocol for quick response during training and racing;
  • Conduct briefing with security personnel on graded stake races, and continuously monitor security personnel;
  • Monitor the horses leaving and entering the backside enclosure;
  • Assist NYRA Veterinarian with out of competition testing;
  • Investigate selected horse fatalities.

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Education: High School diploma. ROAP Accredited Stewards preferred.
  • Experience: Extensive thoroughbred racing industry knowledge; Previous experience as a racing official, steward, investigator or veterinarian preferred but not required.
  • Other Requirements: Knowledge of backstretch activities, racing office procedures and regulatory experience; Racing Official Accreditation Program (“ROAP”) certification a plus (If not accredited, ability to become accredited is required); Ability to work at all three NYRA properties (Aqueduct Racetrack, Belmont Park & Saratoga Race Course for 7 weeks during the summer).
