Fire and Safety Assistant-Mount Sinai West
.The Fire Safety Assistant is a critical member of the Engineering Department who provides support to the Hospital's Fire & Life Safety Program. The Fire Safety Assistant's primary purpose is to assist the Fire Safety Manager in ensuring that the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire protection, suppression, fire alarm, and other life safety systems are in accordance with local, state, and federal regulations, as well as hospital policies and procedures. The Fire Safety Assistant will conduct routine inspections of fire safety systems and maintain the necessary documentation. Furthermore, the Fire Safety Assistant will oversee and conduct the hospital's fire safety training program and fire drill. The Fire Safety Assistant will oversee the work authorization permit process for hot work, as well as requests for above-ceiling and barrier penetration.

- Inspection, Testing & Maintenance of Fire Safety Systems
- Assist the Fire Safety Manager with scheduling, coordinating, and monitoring of Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance of all fire safety systems. Regulatory Inspection/Testing Compliance (Portable Fire Extinguishers, Fire Alarm Systems, Fire Sprinkler Systems, Special Fire Suppression Systems, Fire Alarm Auxiliary Devices)
- Deficiencies or issues identified during Inspection, Testing, and Maintenance require immediate escalation and prompt deficiency resolution via Work Orders and other methods determined by the Department.
- Assist in development of scope of work for deficiency repair.
- Conducts Interim Life Safety Measure assessment and executes corrective actions as required. Verification by follow-up inspection of deficient items for accuracy of code application
- Supervises and monitors vendor activities when on hospital property.
- Coordinates with department stakeholders i.e. Security, EHS, Engineering, PDC, Administration, and Clinical Departments for scheduled activities.
- Maintains accurate inventory lists of all fire safety equipment and systems.
- QA/QC of inspection reports for compliance with regulatory requirements of required information
- Review schedule for regulatory compliance within completion time windows.

- Fire Drill and Fire Safety Training Program
- The Fire Safety Assistant will conduct Regulatory Fire Drills (Training on fire plan) during the required frequency.
- Will lead and conduct fire drills in front of a broad range of audiences throughout the hospital. This will include occasional evenings, overnight, and early morning shifts.
- Will lead and conduct ad hoc fire safety training to staff, vendors, faculty of the hospital to include the use of hands-on equipment i.e. fire alarm system, simulator, fire extinguisher simulator, medical gas valve simulator.
- Will lead and conduct fire response team training as required by the fire response plan.
- Will implement and document ILSM corrective actions as needed.
- Will maintain all fire drills, fire safety training, and ILSM documentation for periodic review during audits and surveys.

- Work Authorization Permit Programs
- Will oversee and execute the hospital’s hot work permit program for all work in the hospital.
- Will oversee and execute the hospitals above ceiling and barrier penetration permit program for all work in the hospital.
- The Fire Safety Assistant will partner with PDC and IT to ensure hospital staff, contractors and outside vendors adhere to hospital policies and procedures relating to such work.
- The Fire Safety Assistant will keep documentation of permit programs.
- Other duties as assigned.
- Will be required to occasionally work during non-traditional hours such as evenings, overnight, weekends, holidays, etc.
Job Requirements
Requirements:
- HS Diploma/GED
- 3-5 years of experience as a fire safety specialist or equivalent, assisting in the inspection, testing, and maintenance of fire safety systems as previously described is required. Experience in conducting fire safety training and drills for a diverse audience is required. May possess a combination of experiences.
- Healthcare experience highly preferred
- Excellent interpersonal and public speaking abilities are required.
- Proficiency in Microsoft applications, including PowerPoint, Excel, Word, and Outlook.
Licensing and Certification Requirements:
- Will have or receive within six months of hire FDNY certificates of fitness:
- W-07 Fire and Emergency Drill Conductor? Required
- S95 Supervision of Fire Alarm Systems? Required
- S12 Supervision of Sprinkler Systems ? preferred
- S13 Supervision of Standpipe System? preferred
- S14 Supervision of Multi-Zone Standpipe System? preferred
