Job Summary

The Fire Alarm Engineer plays a critical role in the design, planning, and costing of fire alarm systems that meet NFPA 72, local building codes, and customer requirements. This position works closely with customers, authorities having jurisdiction (AHJs), architects, engineers, and internal teams to develop accurate system designs and competitive proposals.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, technically strong in fire alarm design, and experienced with Notifier systems. This role blends engineering, estimating, and customer-facing collaboration, supporting projects from concept through installation.

Responsibilities

Key Responsibilities

  • Review architectural and construction plans to evaluate code compliance and fire alarm system requirements
  • Estimate and execute take-offs for fire alarm project bids.
  • Design fire alarm systems based on customer-provided drawings and specifications
  • Perform voltage and battery calculations for system designs.
  • Conduct site surveys as needed to assess building layouts and field conditions
  • Develop accurate Bills of Materials (BOMs) to support pricing and project execution
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates and customer proposals for fire alarm installations
  • Use AutoCAD to create fire alarm design drawings for permitting and plan review
  • Stamp drawings when licensing allows (NICET III at minimum)
  • Communicate effectively with customers, AHJs, architects, and consulting engineers
  • Create submittals, material lists, and documentation for awarded projects
  • Support installation teams post-sale to maintain quality, efficiency, and project margins
  • Maintain a deep working knowledge of Notifier fire alarm systems to ensure compatibility and compliance
  • Stay current with NFPA standards, building codes, and industry changes

Job Requirements

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • Experience with Notifier fire alarm systems (preferred)
  • Proficiency with AutoCAD or other CAD software
  • Strong understanding of NFPA 1, NFPA 70, NFPA 72, IBC, IFC and other applicable building codes
  • Ability to work independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional teams
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
  • Sound professional judgment aligned with safety, compliance and company values
  • High level of integrity, reliability, and professionalism
  • Strong customer service orientation

Required Experiences and Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required)
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field (preferred)
  • NICET Level II in Fire Alarm Systems (required), NICET Level III preferred. Expectation will be to obtain you NICET Level III within a reasonable timeframe.
  • Minimum 2 years of fire alarm system design experience
  • Experience working with AHJ's and plan review process (preferred)
  • Ohio Fire Protection Certification in Fire Alarm and Detection Equipment
