Responsibilities

A Fire Alarm Technician installs, tests, inspects, troubleshoots, repairs, and maintains fire alarm and life-safety systems. Typical responsibilities include:

Key Responsibilities:

  • Install and program fire alarm control panels, detectors, pull stations, notification devices, modules, and related equipment.
  • Perform inspections, testing, and preventive maintenance according to applicable codes and manufacturer requirements.
  • Troubleshoot system faults, wiring issues, communication problems, and device failures.
  • Repair or replace defective components.
  • Read blueprints, wiring diagrams, and system drawings.
  • Perform system commissioning and verify proper operation.
  • Document service calls, inspections, repairs, and test results.
  • Communicate with customers, building managers, contractors, and inspectors.
  • Maintain compliance with applicable NFPA standards and local fire codes.
  • Follow company safety procedures and maintain accurate service records.

Job Requirements

Typical qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Experience with fire alarm systems, electrical systems, or low-voltage systems preferred.
  • Knowledge of NFPA 72 and applicable local fire codes.
  • Ability to read schematics and troubleshoot electrical/low-voltage circuits.
  • Valid driver's license and reliable transportation.
  • Strong customer-service and communication skills.
  • Relevant state/local licensing or NICET certification may be required or preferred.
