Role description:

As a Safety Director you will develop, implement and enforce safety policies and procedures and programs to ensure a safe. This role involves collaborating with client agencies, labor unions, program leadership, program safety officers, field personnel, and contractors to promote a strong safety culture, provide oversight of all safety events, records, documentation, procedures, processes, investigations and systems.

The salary range for this position is $140,000 - $175,000. Actual salaries will vary and are based on several factors, such as experience, education, budget, internal equity, project and location.

Responsibilities

Role accountabilities:

  • Work with client agencies and project contractors in putting in place and managing processes to identify and control risks related to safety.
  • Establish a quality audit program and oversee quality audits of safety systems to verify that all program participants are in compliance with safety and security plans.
  • Ensure compliance with local, state, and federal safety regulations and standards.
  • Ensure that regular safety audits and inspections are conducted in order to identify and address potential hazards.
  • Develop and deliver safety training programs for all program personnel.
  • Ensure that training is in place such that all workers are adequately trained on safety procedures, equipment usage, and emergency response protocols.
  • Assist in the investigation of accidents, incidents, and near-misses to determine root causes and develop corrective action plans.
  • Ensure the maintenance of accurate records of all safety incidents, ensuring timely reporting and analysis.
  • Lead a team of safety managers who will monitor and enforce adherence to safety policies and regulations by all project personnel.
  • Collaborate with regulatory agencies during inspections and audits.
  • Develop and implement emergency response plans for various potential scenarios.
  • Conduct regular drills and exercises to ensure effective responses to emergencies.
  • Communicate safety expectations, updates, and best practices to all project team members.
  • Foster open communication channels for reporting safety concerns and suggestions.
  • Identify opportunities for continuous improvement in safety processes and procedures.
  • Implement initiatives to enhance the overall safety performance of the project.

Job Requirements

Qualifications & Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Engineering, or a related field
  • 15+ Years of experience in safety management preferably on heavy civil construction projects.
  • In depth knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and best practices
  • Experience in developing and implementing safety programs
  • Relevant safety certifications (e.g., CSP, CHST) are a plus.
  • Previous experience in heavy civil construction, tunneling, or similar projects.
  • In-depth knowledge of OSHA regulations and other relevant safety standards.
