The Fort Irwin Fire Department is seeking motivated, dedicated, and community-focused individuals to join our team. Fort Irwin is the US Army National Training Center, home to more than 24,000 people. The base population surges by an additional 10,000 several times a year as Army units rotate in for live-fire training and evaluation. Firefighter/EMTs play a crucial role in rescuing and protecting thousands of visitors and the families of those who defend America. Fort Irwin Firefighter/EMTs work in the extreme climate of the Mojave Desert and may be called to perform the rescue of injured soldiers from the 1,450 square mile remote training area or the city-sized main base area.
The department operates three fire stations, two four-person paramedic engines, a four-person BLS truck company, one dedicated Aircraft Rescue and Firefighting (ARFF) station, and has one full-time FIFD Firefighter/Paramedic assigned to a rescue helicopter. The addition of two ICEMA certified Paramedic Rescue Ambulances is pending at the time of this announcement.
Under supervision, performs duties in the protection of life, property, and the environment thorough fire prevention, fire suppression, and emergency medical assistance within the EMT scope of practice. Performs related responsibilities as required, meets the requirements for Firefighter I & II NFPA 1001. Responds to fire and other emergency alarms. May drive emergency equipment if required. Assist in all operations necessary to ensure the confinement and extinguishment of fire or of the elimination of other hazardous conditions. Cleaning vehicles, and fire station property.
Under general supervision, you will perform a full range of firefighting duties, including fire suppression, emergency medical services, fire prevention, and public education. Respond to fire alarms, rescue, and medical emergencies to protect life and property. Primary duties include laying and connecting hoses, directing water streams, and using forcible entry tools. Firefighters/EMTs climb ladders, ventilate structures, and perform rescue operations. They provide immediate medical care at emergency scenes and may be required to transport patients to medical facilities via ground or air ambulance. Firefighters/EMTs also operate and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus, perform routine maintenance and inspections of fire apparatus and equipment, test and maintain fire alarm systems to ensure they are fully operational, and assist in cleaning and maintaining the fire station to ensure a safe and functional environment.

- Emergency Response:
- Respond promptly to fire alarms, rescue alarms, and medical emergency calls with initiative and a can-do attitude.
- Perform fire suppression activities including laying and connecting hoses, directing water streams, and using forcible entry tools.
- Climb ladders, ventilate structures, and perform rescue operations in hazardous conditions.
- Medical Services:
- Provide immediate medical care at emergency scenes, including basic life support and advanced life support as needed.
- Transport patients to medical facilities while ensuring their safety and providing necessary medical treatment en route.
- Fire Prevention and Education:
- Participate in fire prevention activities, including inspections and community education programs with proactive enthusiasm.
- Conduct public education sessions on fire safety and emergency preparedness.
- Equipment and Maintenance:
- Operate and maintain firefighting equipment and apparatus, ensuring they are in good working condition.
- Perform routine maintenance and inspections of fire apparatus and equipment, identifying and addressing any issues.
- Training and Development:
- Participate in ongoing training and development programs to maintain and enhance firefighting and medical skills.
- Stay updated with the latest firefighting techniques, equipment, and medical protocols.
- Team Collaboration:
- Work collaboratively with other firefighters, EMTs, and emergency personnel to ensure effective and efficient emergency response.
- Communicate effectively with team members, supervisors, and other stakeholders.
- Demonstrate initiative and a positive, can-do attitude in all interactions and duties.
Job Requirements
Qualifications
- Must possess the ability to use sound judgment and common sense when performing job functions.
- Must be a U.S. citizen.
- Must possess high school diploma or equivalent.
- Must have received formal Firefighter training and certification (CSFM, DoD, IFSAC, Pro-Board, Community College program or equivalent).
- Must possess a current EMT certification (ICEMA, National Registry or equivalent).
- Must pass national background check to include drug screening.
- Must possess valid state (any state) issued driver's license.
- Have the ability to follow written and verbal instructions in English.
- Qualified candidate must possess proof of passing CPAT (Candidate Physical Ability Test), Biddle or equivalent.
