Job Description

The Fire Commander is responsible for the overall management and supervision of fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical services. This leadership role ensures the safety of personnel and the public, enforces departmental policies, and provides critical incident command during emergencies. The Fire Commander plays a crucial role in maintaining operational readiness and contributing to the safety and well-being of the community.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities

  • Plan and oversee daily operations involving fire stations and firefighting companies.
  • Enforce departmental policies, procedures, and safety regulations.
  • Respond to fire alarms and emergency calls as the first arriving officer.
  • Provide incident command until relieved by a chief officer.
  • Direct fire suppression, rescue, and emergency medical aid activities.
  • Participate in fire cause investigations and determine when senior expertise is required.
  • Issue disciplinary actions, including verbal counseling and written reprimands, as appropriate.
  • Evaluate emergency situations and allocate resources effectively.
  • Ensure adherence to safety practices and operational protocols

Job Requirements

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in fire service, with at least 3 years in a supervisory or command role.
  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Must meet Emergency Services Certification Program (F&ESCP) standards.
  • Fire Officer III.
  • Fire Instructor I.
  • Fire Inspector I.
  • Firefighter II.
  • Driver Operator.
  • Hazmat Operations.
  • Technical Rescue.
  • EMT – Basic.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Fire Instructor II.
  • Fire Inspector II.
  • Hazardous Materials Incident Commander.

Skills & Competencies:

  • Strong leadership and decision-making skills under pressure.
  • In-depth knowledge of fireground tactics, ICS/NIMS, and emergency response protocols.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage personnel and resolve conflicts effectively.
  • Commitment to safety, training, and continuous improvement.

Work Environment:

  • Exposure to hazardous conditions, including fire, smoke, and extreme weather.
  • Requires physical fitness and the ability to wear PPE.
  • On-call availability, including nights, weekends, and holidays.
